Breakdown or accident on the motorway: assistance's big test

The motorway is the fastest route – and the worst place for anything to go wrong. With a flat tyre or a technical fault, the real risk isn't the car, it's the person: statistics show the hard shoulder is a particularly dangerous place to be. This is where you see what assistance cover is really worth – and what being prepared is worth.

In brief:
  • The first rule is always personal safety: hi-vis vest, behind the barrier line, outside the crash barrier – the car can be replaced.
  • Assistance covers: on-the-spot repair or towing, onward travel or accommodation within the set limits – for a technical fault too, if the policy says so.
  • Casco steps in when an insured event has occurred (a collision, a natural-hazard loss) – together, the two cover a bad day on the motorway.

The safety order – before you deal with anything else

Pull onto the hard shoulder, turn your wheels to the right, hazard lights on. Put your hi-vis vest on while still inside the car, and have passengers wait OUTSIDE the crash barrier – never inside the car, and never behind it. Place the warning triangle at the required distance. Only then does the phone come out: the emergency number if there's a hazard; the assistance line if you've "just" broken down. This order isn't a matter of courtesy – it's a life-safety rule.

What assistance covers – and what to ask about it when taking out the policy

Good assistance cover ranges from an on-the-spot quick fix through towing to arranging onward travel or accommodation – depending on the event and the limits. The key questions to ask when taking out the policy: does it cover technical faults too, or accidents only? Up to what distance or amount will it tow you? Do you get a replacement car? What about abroad? The policy wording gives the answer – in our comparison table, assistance gets its own line, because in everyday life it's the service people actually experience the most.

If an accident happens: the casco side

For a collision on the motorway, the usual process applies, with two extra points to note: only document the scene from a safe position, and expect measures from the road operator (diversions, vehicle removal). Reporting runs through the insurer's claims line, detailed here, with collision cover details here. Wildlife collisions happen on motorways too – the rules in the wildlife collision article apply there.
