Map of Extras: Luggage, Replacement Car, Assistance and More

The core cover protects the car – the extras make sure your life keeps moving after a claim: something to get to work in, someone to pull you out of the ditch, and your laptop in the boot not lost for good. A good set of extras isn't "as many as possible", but a selection matched to your life.

In brief:
  • Extras typically come with limits: caps on amount, days, or number of uses – clarify this when signing up.
  • The most commonly missed element at claim time: replacement-car cover – for anyone who drives daily, this isn't a luxury.
  • Assistance isn't a duplicate: casco pays for the repair, assistance is the on-the-spot help at the scene.

Assistance: help that comes to you

A flat tyre, a dead battery, running out of fuel, sliding into a ditch: assistance is rapid help at the roadside – a mechanic, towing, onward travel or accommodation, typically depending on the event and subject to limits. It really comes into its own on motorways and abroad: a breakdown or accident on the motorway. When signing up, it's worth clarifying which events it can be called for and up to what limit – and whether it covers mechanical breakdowns too, or only accidents.

Replacement car and luggage: everyday cover

The replacement-car extra provides a substitute vehicle during repairs – typically with a day limit and a category rule. For anyone who depends on the car daily, this is the most noticeable benefit at claim time. Luggage cover applies to personal belongings carried in the car, typically with a monetary limit and storage conditions (e.g. in the boot, out of sight) – details here: occupants' belongings in the car.

Accident elements and value protection

Many casco policies let you add accident cover for the occupants – a useful layer, but not a substitute for standalone accident insurance: for deeper cover, see baleset.biz, and for where the line falls, see the personal injury article. For a new car, there's also the question of value protection: the GAP idea – handling the gap between the purchase price and the market value at the time of loss in a total-loss claim.

How should you choose?

With three questions: What would happen if the car were off the road for two weeks tomorrow? What kind of journeys do you make (daily commute, motorway, abroad)? What do you regularly carry? The answers show which extras are worth real money in your life – and which are just a premium-boosting reflex. It's worth making this selection before you sign – if you let me know, I can help with it.
