MTPL and casco together: which one applies, and when?

In every driver's life, two policies sit side by side – or could: compulsory motor third-party liability insurance (MTPL) and casco. They aren't competitors, and they don't overlap: they cover two different risks. Anyone who understands the division of labour between them doesn't panic at claim time – and doesn't pay for anything unnecessary when taking out cover either.

In brief:
  • MTPL: a legal requirement, it settles damage to SOMEONE ELSE. Casco: optional, it covers YOUR OWN car.
  • For most everyday claims, the question is simple: who suffered the loss? – the answer tells you which policy applies.
  • Managing both together (one renewal date, one overview table) brings transparency – the autumn MTPL renewal season is also a good moment to review your casco.

The division of labour in one sentence – and the case map

If the damage belongs to SOMEONE ELSE (the other car, a fence, a pedestrian's coat): your MTPL applies. If the damage is to YOUR OWN car: casco applies – regardless of who is at fault. The detailed, seven-scenario case map lives in the companion article; the most common borderline case – an unknown at-fault driver – has its own article: whose loss is it?. The depths of the MTPL side, meanwhile, are covered by our sister site: kotelezo.biz.

One incident, two policies? Parallel cases

Sometimes both policies are involved: you cause an accident, the other party's damage goes to your MTPL, and the damage to your own car goes to your casco – two cases, two claim numbers, running in parallel. As a not-at-fault party, you may also face a choice: report to the at-fault driver's MTPL insurer, or run it through your own casco and leave the settling-up to the insurers (the casco insurer's recovery claim against the at-fault driver's insurer) – weighing up speed against the deductible question, as we detailed in the practical article.

Why does it pay to manage them together?

Three reasons. Transparency: one table shows your full motoring cost and cover picture. Timing: the autumn MTPL renewal campaign (for policies with a 1 January anniversary) is also a natural moment to review your casco – your car paperwork is out on the table anyway. Administration: aligned to one anniversary date, the annual routine becomes a single quarter of an hour: the anniversary routine. The switching logistics are covered further in the article on how switching works.
