Car needs assessment: what does the broker ask, and why?

Good casco cover doesn't start from a price table, but from questions. The 20-minute needs assessment isn't a formality: every question underpins a specific setting – from the deductible to the extra covers. Here's what I'll ask, and what each one is for.

In brief:
  • The needs assessment covers six topics: the car, usage, storage, drivers, claims history and budget.
  • No need to prepare in advance: it's a conversation, no documents required – you'll get the data checklist afterwards.
  • The outcome isn't an offer, but a direction: what structure is worth requesting quotes for – the decision is yours.

The car and its value

Make and model, year, mileage, equipment, extras – these combine into the realistic value picture that underpins the sizing of your cover: the article on tracking your car's real value shows why this is a key question. This is also where it becomes clear whether it's worth thinking in the direction of GAP cover (new car), or instead towards partial casco (older value).

Usage, storage and drivers

Annual mileage, the type of routes (town, motorway, sections with wildlife risk), how much you depend on the car day to day – this builds the claims profile and points towards the right deductible. Storage (garage vs. the street) decides the weight given to theft and weather cover. The circle of drivers (family members, a young driver in the household) is a matter of risk profile and honest disclosure – at claim time, that honesty is what keeps things dispute-free.

Claims history, financing, budget

Claims history matters on the premium side (no-claims discounts), while financing (a loan or lease) brings in the mandatory elements: assignment to the financer, the required level of cover. The budget question, meanwhile, is a matter of honesty: how much the household can afford each month, and how large a deductible would be manageable at claim time – the proposed structure is built on that. After the assessment comes the data checklist, then comparing the offers – step by step.
